La eurodiputada liberal Sophie in ‘t Veld ha recordado que la muerte de Marinova es el tercer asesinato de un periodista en la UE en un año. La periodista maltesa Daphne Caruana Galizia fue asesinada por un coche bomba en octubre de 2017, mientras que el reportero eslovaco Ján Kuciak fue asesinado en febrero. La investigación de Marinova y su equipo se centraba en proyectos de infraestructura financiados por la UE y administrados por autoridades locales. Según sus pesquisas, entre un 30 y un 40% de los fondos recibidos por un grupo de empresas se perdió por corrupción y sobornos, informa el portal Politico.

La comisaria de Justicia de la UE, Vera Jourova, ha asegurado que vigilará la investigación del asesinato de Marinova y ha ofrecido la ayuda de las agencias europeas. «Consternada por el brutal asesinato de Victoria Marinova, una joven periodista búlgara. Seguiré de cerca la investigación y ofreceré ayuda a las agencias de la UE, si es necesario. Espero acciones urgentes para llevar a los responsables ante la justicia y para aclarar si el ataque estaba vinculado a su trabajo», ha declarado.
Por su parte, el Comité para la Protección de los Periodistas (CPJ) también se ha declarado «conmocionado por el brutal asesinato» de Marinova, en palabras del representante de la organización en la UE, Tom Gibson. «Las autoridades búlgaras deben emplear todos los esfuerzos y recursos para llevar a cabo una investigación exhaustiva y llevar a los responsables ante la justicia». La Fiscalía de Ruse y la policía local han declarado este domingo en una conferencia de prensa que analizarían «todas las versiones» del asesinato.
La última emisión de Marinova fue una entrevista con el periodista rumano Attila Biro, del portal de investigación Rise Project, y su homólogo búlgaro, Dimitar Stoyanov, del portal de noticias Bivol, quienes investigaron las denuncias.
