Khashoggi está desaparecido desde el martes de hace dos semanas. La Policía turca lo dio por asesinado dentro del Consulado saudí en Estambul cuatro días después, en base a pruebas no dispuestas, aunque hasta el momento ninguna autoridad había querido confirmar tal versión. La investigación no ha aclarado hasta ahora las circunstancias de su muerte.
De acuerdo con el medio estadounidense, en base a fuentes no detalladas, el Gobierno saudí está preparando un informe en el que reconocerá la muerte del periodista saudí en el curso de un interrogatorio de resultado adverso. Originalmente, matiza CNN, los agentes saudíes tenían previsto capturar al columnista del ‘Washington Post’. Aparte, dicho dossier pretende concluir que la operación fue llevada a cabo sin el visto bueno correspondiente ni transparencia y que los involucrados serán responsabilizados de lo ocurrido. Una de las fuentes citadas por CNN alertó de que «el informe todavía está en preparación» -su fecha de publicación no declarada- y que el enunciado final todavía podía cambiar. Otra de las fuentes aseguraba que el dossier «probablemente concluiría» el mencionado y trágico sino del periodista, alguien cercano a los círculos de poder de Riad que en ningún momento cesó en denunciar al príncipe heredero, Mohamed bin Salman.
Lo acusó de perseguir a sus críticos e incendiar Yemen bajo una pátina de reformismo. Cambio de versiónDe esa forma, Riad ha efectuado un giro de 180 grados respecto a su versión inicial. En ella, aseguraban, el hombre de 59 años, que desde hacía uno residía en EEUU en un exilio autoimpuesto por miedo a su integridad física, había dejado el Consulado a media tarde, cerca de una hora después de entrar. Khasoggi había acudido, citado por las autoridades saudíes a propósito, para tramitar unos papeles necesarios para su próxima boda. Hatice Cengiz, su prometida, insistió en todo momento en que jamás salió de él.Así lo corroboraron las cámaras de seguridad de alrededor del consulado y de la cercana residencia del cónsul -ninguna cámara saudí funcionó ese día-.
El reino tenía en contra todo el resultado de las pesquisas policiales: los agentes habían asegurado a la prensa que poseían grabaciones del interrogatorio, la tortura y el posterior asesinato de Khashoggi; en el centro de la investigación, un equipo de 15 saudíes, incluido un funcionario forense, que había ido allí el día de autos. Las llamadas a investigar el caso Khashoggi, en un momento de especial sensibilidad respecto al asesinato de informadores en todo el mundo, procedieron, aunque mediante mensajes tibios, de Europa y EEUU. Presionado por la amenaza de invocar la Ley Magnistky contra un país aliado, el presidente estadounidense, Donald Trump, endureció el tono contra Riad en las últimas horas, si bien sugirió la posibilidad de que el asesinato del articulista fuese un trabajo del «hampa» del entorno de Riad.La respuesta de Arabia Saudí ha sido fría en un primer momento, y furibunda a medida que el ruido en torno al caso aumentaba. Este domingo, el reino del desierto afirmó su «rechazo total a cualquier amenaza» e intento de socavamiento de su autoridad» a través del amago de imponer sanciones económicas, el uso de presiones políticas o la repetición de falsas acusaciones que no debilitaran al reino ni sus posiciones firmes».
