Dos meses después de la invasión rusa casi 20.000 ucranianos han llegado a la Comunitat Valenciana huyendo de la guerra.
Dos meses después de que Vladímir Putin iniciara la invasión rusa sobre Ucrania, cerca de diez millones de ucranianos, lo que supone una cuarta parte de su población total, ha huido de sus hogares según los datos que maneja la Agencia de Naciones Unidas para los Refugiados (Acnur). De ellos, cerca de la mitad han optado por dejar atrás su país y buscar refugio en otros estados de la Unión Europea -y, en mucha menor medida, Rusia-.
Esa diáspora ha llegado también hasta la Comunitat Valenciana donde fuentes de la Conselleria de Igualdad y Políticas Inclusivas cifran en 422 los refugiados actualmente acogidos en los distintos albergues de Piles (84 personas), Bihar (64), Moraira (68), Paterna (62) y Benicàssim (144); aunque reconocen que la cifra total de ucranianos que actualmente se encuentran en la Comunitat es mucho mayor ya que ese número sólo refleja a aquellos que residen actualmente en esos albergues.
El número exacto de víctimas de la guerra que se encuentran en territorio valenciano en la actualidad es, según las distintas fuentes consultadas, imposible de conocer con exactitud. Ello se debe a que, además de aquellas personas que han entrado en España a través de los tres centros de recepción habilitados por el Gobierno –uno de ellos, el de Ciudad de la Luz en Alicante–, son mayoría los que lo han hecho de forma particular o ayudados por distintas ONG y se encuentran ahora residiendo con familiares o familias de acogida.
De hecho, los datos que con más fidelidad se pueden acercar a la cifra real son los que emanan de las casi 19.000 tarjetas SIP que hasta el momento se han entregado a personas procedentes de Ucrania, una ‘foto fija’ que puede dar una idea algo más clara de la dimensión real de este drama.
El cónsul honorario de Ucrania en València, Pablo Gil, explica, en cualquier caso, que “es imposible acercarse a un número más aproximado que el que nos ofrecen las tarjetas SIP entregadas porque no hay un indicador que cubran todas las situaciones ya que, efectivamente, hay gente que ha pedido la tarjeta sanitaria, pero que ya estaba aquí previamente; gente que la ha pedido y que sí que es refugiada y gente refugiada que no ha pedido la tarjeta”.
El diplomático asegura, además, que “con las demandas de protección internacional estamos igual: sabemos las cifras aproximadas de cuántos han pedido la documentación, pero hay muchos que piensan que van a regresar pronto y, por lo tanto, no lo han pedido”.
“De ahí nació la idea del registro consular. Creo que, al menos en València, lo podremos poner en marcha la semana que viene. Se trata de un censo en el que se podrá apuntar el que quiera y de manera voluntaria para recibir todo aquello que, por nuestro lado, podamos aportarles e informarles”, adelanta Gil.
Más de 2.000 estudiantes escolarizados
Pese a ese baile de cifras, la Generalitat Valenciana ya ha destinado 3,5 millones de euros “para la acogida y atención integral de personas desplazadas de Ucrania en albergues del Instituto Valenciano de la Juventud”, tal y como ha explicado la vicepresidenta Mónica Oltra.
Un dinero que se ha destinado de forma prioritaria a “financiar la contratación de emergencia del servicio de acogida de las personas que no disponen de recursos de alojamiento y que, de forma temporal, serán atendidas en los albergues del IVAJ habilitados para ello”, un servicio cuya gestión “se realizará por parte de las ONG”.
De lo que sí ha podido dar datos concretos Mónica Oltra es sobre el proceso de escolarización de los menores llegados a la Comunitat Valenciana. Así, la vicepresidenta del Consell ha destacado que la región “ha escolarizado al 40% de menores que han llegado a España, lo que supone cerca de 2.000 alumnos de Ucrania que ya se han escolarizado en aulas de colegios e institutos de nuestra comunidad”, habilitando nuevas unidades educativas allí donde ha sido necesario.
Movimientos de regreso
El cónsul honorario de Ucrania alerta de que “la situación es muy compleja e inédita porque la casuística es casi infinita: tenemos a los desplazados de 2014 en el interior de Ucrania, que en su día se marcharon del Dombás a Kiev y al oeste del país y que parte de ellos ya han comenzado a marcharse a Europa ahora”.
De hecho, llama la atención sobre que “a finales de esta semana me han dado un dato llamativo: en dos días han vuelto a entrar en Ucrania 25.000 personas. Eso ha provocado que en Kiev se hayan organizado unos atascos de tráfico tremendos que han dificultado la entrada de la ayuda humanitaria y la movilidad del ejército”. Una corriente a la que no es agena la Comunitat Valenciana ya que “nosotros ya hemos recibido peticiones de desplazados que, tras haber llegado a la Comunitat Valenciana, nos piden ayuda para regresar”
Respecto a los motivos que pueden estar detrás de estas decisiones, a priori, tan temerarias, Pablo Gil considera que “es un problema de la percepción del riesgo y de la propia guerra por parte de muchos. Los que están en las zonas más castigadas son los que primero hicieron de refugiados interiores y ahora, poco a poco, van viniendo a Europa. Pero los que estaban en la zona más segura y que, además, han visto que las tropas rusas se han retirado del norte de Kiev, quieren volver a su hogar”.
Ese cúmulo de circunstancias aparentemente antagónicas pone, además, trabas en la labor de las ONG y demás agencias que están tratando de ayudar a aquellos que desean salir del país. Tal y como explica el cónsul, “todo ello dificulta mucho la labor de todos porque un día me llaman desde la frontera diciéndome que no hay gente suficiente para llenar los autobuses y otro día se producen avalanchas de desplazados que quieren venir”.
Una nueva oleada
Y todo ello, sin olvidar que, según adelanta Gil, es más que probable que en los próximos días y semanas se produzca una nueva oleada de desplazados desde Ucrania al resto de la Unión Europea. Un éxodo que, como explica el diplomático, estaría muy vinculada a la inminente gran ofensiva rusa sobre el Dombás de la que están alertando varios servicios de inteligencia occidentales.
En opinión de Pablo Gil, esa nueva ola de refugiados se producirá “más por la expectativa de esa ofensiva. Se trata de gente que ha ido huyendo de zonas más cercanas a la línea del frente. Creo que esta segunda fase va a ser muy numerosa y que lo vamos a notar en poco tiempo”.
Una situación que volverá a tensar enormemente las ya de por sí debilitadas costuras de la ayuda humanitaria. El cónsul honorario de Ucrania avisa de que el éxito de esa nueva operación “dependerá de cómo se organice el transporte. Ellos tienen gratuidad en el tren, pero las ONG como Juntos por la Vida han estado organizando autobuses y les ayudan a llegar hasta aquí buscándoles, además, familias de acogida. El problema es que los recursos de las ONG son finitos y lo que no sabemos, al no asignar cupos la Unión Europea, quién se va a encargar del transporte de todos los que están llegando ahora a Polonia”.
Pablo Gil, además, trata de adelantarse a los problemas que puedan ir surgiendo en el futuro a corto plazo. “Algo que llevo un tiempo hablando con Cáritas, es el problema de la segunda acogida. La primera siempre es muy llamativa porque siempre hay mucha solidaridad ciudadana y los medios de comunicación están constantemente hablando de ello”.
Sin embargo, reconoce, “las familias que han sido acogidas, a su vez, por otras familias tienen un refugio temporal, pero necesariamente habrá que dar un salto y es donde podemos encontrar una barrera. Habrá quien no lo necesite, porque decida regresar a Ucrania. Pero, por ejemplo, el que vivía en Mariupol… es que Mariupol ya no existe. Hay muchos que no podrán regresar a medio plazo”.
“Debemos ser conscientes de que para las familias de acogida, la convivencia con los desplazados es costosa y, en ocasiones, difícil”, expone. Por ello, Pablo Gil se pregunta “¿qué va a pasar después? Emplazo a las autoridades a que saquen, de una vez por todas, una especie de renta del refugiado hasta que puedan encontrar un trabajo”.
Por último el cónsul honorario de Ucrania lanza un segundo llamamiento urgente para abordar “otro elemento fundamental como es habilitar un aval para seguros de alquiler que permita que el aval responsa por el inquilino y que, de esta manera, los propietarios de viviendas puedan alquilar a esta gente. Muchos de los que sí tienen recursos para alquilar aquí una vivienda no lo están haciendo porque les piden un año por adelantado y no se pueden librar de golpe de toda la liquidez que tienen”.
La Safor, una comarca con gran vinculación con Ucrania
Como queda demostrado por los datos, así como por las afirmaciones de aquellos que trabajan más cerca de los refugiados que han llegado a la Comunitat Valenciana huyendo del horror de la guerra, la realidad de todas estas personas es muy similar a lo largo y ancho de toda la región.
Así, en la Safor han sido muchas las personas y colectivos que se han movilizado en estos dos meses. La vinculación de jóvenes ucranianos con la comarca ha hecho que se haya producido una llegada masiva. De hecho, algunos chicos y chicas de más de 20 años llevan viniendo a la comarca a pasar sus veranos desde su niñez, de ahí la sensibilización de las familias de la zona.
En los primeros días de conflicto, fueron muchas las familias que acudieron a Polonia a recoger a sus seres queridos. “Fuimos con miedo, con bidones de gasolina en el coche y teníamos que esperar a que cruzaran Ucrania caminando o en algún vehículo de incógnito”, ha precisado Joaquina Esparza, una madre de dos hijos que lleva acogiendo a una joven desde hace más de 20 años y que hoy en día ya es toda una mujer.
Por otro lado, grupos de voluntarios de l’Alqueria de la Comtessa se pusieron a trabajar para ayudar a los ucranianos que iban llegando. “No sabíamos muy bien cómo hacerlo, todo el mundo quería ayudarnos. Empezamos por hacer listados de todo lo que nos donaban: camas, cunas, ropa o colchones”.
El objetivo era que cuando una familia llegara a un hogar de acogida pudieran tener lo necesario para quedarse “ya que en todas las casas no hay camas de sobra o material para que viva más gente”, ha precisado Joana Rico, una de las impulsoras de esta iniciativa. La joven de l’Alqueria ha dado las gracias al Ayuntamiento de la localidad, que prestó locales municipales para poder almacenar y catalogar todo el material.
De forma paralela se ha creado la ONG Despierta Acoge, que está trabajando en la recogida y envió de material. “Hay voluntarios de todo tipo, médicos o psicólogos, por ejemplo, todos somos necesarios para ayudar a estas personas que están viviendo la peor experiencia de su vida”.
De hecho, Despierta Acoge ya ha enviado material sanitario donado por varias farmacias como la del Paseo de Gandia, a través del movimiento solidario Strong People, l’Alqueria y la farmacdia de la Playa de Oliva. Cientos de cajas con medicinas y otros elementos necesarios para personas heridas.
Por otro lado, se está a la espera de la llegada de un autobús a El Real de Gandia, desde donde se informó que se iban a volcar con el pueblo ucraniano con el fin de darles una vida digna en la Safor, de forma temporal o definitiva.
“No tenemos dónde volver”. Se trata del testimonio de Tania Naumanova, una joven madre que dejó su Ucrania natal tras el inicio de la ocupación rusa, y que desde hace dos semanas disfruta de una nueva vida en Alcoi.
Tania llegó a la capital de l’Alcoià el pasado 8 de abril junto a su marido y su prole; las jóvenes Viky y Katy de 8 y 3 años respectivamente, y el pequeño Artur, de apenas 15 meses.
La Asociación Alcoyana Amigos de los Refugiados de Guerra ‘Tareg’ ha sido la encargada de conseguir alojamiento a la familia Naumanova. Es la segunda familia a la que la agrupación ha conseguido traer a Alcoi; primero fueron los Verbnyi, cuyos seis integrantes llegaron a la ciudad el pasado mes de marzo.
Vivir en España supone un “sueño hecho realidad” para Tania. Reconoce que desde que era pequeña aspiraba a visitar nuestro país; de hecho, empezó a estudiar castellano cuando tenía 17 años.
“Yo comprendo un poco” afirma entre risas con un perfecto castellano. Fruto de esa pasión por la lengua de Cervantes escribió hace años un pequeño relato protagonizado por un joven llamado Miguel. Aleksander, el marido de Tania, ya ha empezado a asistir a clases de castellano en la Escuela Oficial de Idiomas de Alcoi. Mientras, ella espera incorporarse cuando sus hijas empiecen a ir al colegio.
Aprender el idioma será clave para que ambos progenitores encuentren trabajo en la ciudad, y es que les gustaría asentarse en Alcoi. “Teníamos pensado irnos a vivir al extranjero incluso antes de que estallara la guerra. España era uno de nuestros destinos favoritos, pero no sabíamos cómo establecernos aquí”.
Tania admite que tiene pocas razones para volver a Ucrania. “Es difícil predecir cuánto durará la Guerra. Además, en Kiev vivíamos en un apartamento alquilado, por lo que ahora no tenemos sitio al que volver”.
La única familia que la joven madre ha dejado al este de Europa son dos hermanos; uno vive en Polonia, y el otro, en una región ucraniana que por el momento no está sufriendo las acometidas del ejército ruso.
La situación de la familia de su marido es distinta, puesto que viven en una zona fronteriza con Crimea (uno de los lugares donde más se ha recrudecido el conflicto). “No les dejan salir y además les falta comida. Estamos muy preocupados por ellos”, afirma Tania.a profesora online
Lleva algo más de un mes en España, en concreto en la ciudad de Sagunto, y trata de continuar con su vida de la manera más normal posible. Y, por lo que respecta a su trabajo, lo está consiguiendo.
Irina Nechytailenko es una profesora de Primaria de 25 años de edad que desarrollaba su trabajo en uno de los escenarios más dantescos de la guerra y que más minutos e imágenes ocupó en los medios de comunicación: la ciudad de Bucha. Aún recuerda lo que ocurrió el día en que todo se inició. “Comenzaron a escucharse una serie de explosiones y nos dijeron que teníamos diez minutos para recoger todas nuestras pertenencias”, explica.
Uno de los objetos que se pudo llevar consigo es su ordenador portátil. Es a través del mismo como aún hoy mantiene el contacto con sus alumnos, que tienen entre 6 y 10 años de edad. Para Irina es extraño, pero poco a poco se va acostumbrando a seguir con las clases y disfrutar en cierta medida de la alegría que le transmiten sus jóvenes alumnos, “que están distribuidos por diferentes ciudades y países. Ellos están felices”, afirma.
El hecho de que sus alumnos sean de Primaria, reconoce, hace algo más fácil la docencia para Irina. Confiesa que si fueran algo mayores, las dificultades aumentarían. Recuerda que la experiencia del Covid ya le hizo verse forzada a probar la enseñanza online, por lo que ahora, en unas circunstancias mucho más complicadas, se ha visto obligada a retomarla.
Esta joven está en Sagunto desde el pasado 9 de marzo, unas pocas jornadas antes de las Fallas, que reconoce, le asustaron un poco al principio hasta que se acostumbró. La salida de Bucha, la ciudad en que trabaja desde hace varios años, fue “pensando que íbamos a tener que estar un tiempo en una ciudad cercana hasta que todo se tranquilizara, pero todo se fue complicando” y al final ha acabado en un país que ya visitó en diciembre en circunstancias muy diferentes: “estuve en Barcelona y me encantó”, recuerda.
Entre sus recuerdos de esos primeros días de estrés están las largas retenciones de tráfico: seis carriles repletos de vehículos que buscaban huir del infierno: “Un trayecto que normalmente cuesta ocho horas nos costó alrededor de 22”, rememora.
Su familia, mientras tanto, permanece en Donestk, “una ciudad que ya fue ocupada hace ocho años”. Con respecto a su estancia en Sagunto, ha conseguido un alojamiento donde está junto a una compañera de trabajo y se siente afortunada por haber recibido la hospitalidad de un pastor de su iglesia.
Su escuela privada en Ucrania también le ingresó un anticipo de su salario, por lo que ha podido comprar la ropa que no pudo traerse de su país y hacer frente así a los gastos diarios. Irina mantiene la confianza en que cuando todo se solucione pueda volver a Bucha, ya que tanto el edificio en que vivía como el colegio en que trabajaba permanecen intactos según ha podido confirmar. “Hay algunos edificios donde sólo han quedado los cimientos. Depende del área”. “Ojalá todo acabe pronto”, concluye.
Anna llegó a l’Alcúdia el 19 de marzo junto a su hijo de tres meses, Alexander. El miedo a que le pasara algo malo a su bebé hizo que se decidiera por abandonar la ciudad de Lviv y dejar allí a su marido y al resto de su familia.
“Uno de los primeros días pasé seis horas encerrada en un refugio junto a mi hijo, me afectó mucho y no quería que se repitiera”, explica esta joven de 28 a través de la traducción de su tía Hanna con la que vive ahora. Esta economista, como muchos otros jóvenes ucranianos, nunca pensaron que las amenazas de Putin se harían realidad e invadiría su país.
Ahora la vida le ha cambiado completamente y su hijo crece lejos de su país y de su padre. «Mi marido se ha quedado allí trabajando, ayuda a la gente desplazada en el gimnasio donde daba clases de boxeo y a través de las videollamadas ve cómo va creciendo el niño», comenta Anna con gran dolor.
Las ganas de volver a su casa no se pierden, aunque la situación cada vez es más complicada y es consciente de que todavía pasará tiempo hasta que pueda regresar. Pero lo que tiene claro es lo que espera del futuro. «Mi esperanza es que Alexander viva en un país libre, independiente y con futuro. Se está luchando por la libertad», recuerda esta madre preocupada mientras su pequeño duerme plácidamente ajeno al momento tan difícil en el que ha llegado al mundo.
Su tía, más mayor que ella y que llegó en 2013 a España huyendo de los problemas que comenzaban a gestarse con la crisis de Crimea, apostilla que «ya hemos vivido bajo la capucha de la URSS y eso ya no lo quiere nadie. Cada uno quiere tener libertad y elegir dónde vivir».
Hanna quiere que los españoles conozcan la realidad que vive su país, alejado del discurso que Rusia ha hecho de ellos. «Somos gente trabajadora, tenemos medios para desarrollarnos y no nos dejan. Nuestros vecinos nos quieren matar, ocupar nuestras tierras y están saqueándolo todo», señala esta mujer que lamenta que Rusia considere que Ucrania es su enemigo «cuando el enemigo lo tienen en el Kremlin, todos tienen miedo».
Hanna también reclama un mayor apoyo de los países europeos a Ucrania con el envío de armas. «Las amenazas de Rusia son todo fachada. Hay que hacerles frente y demostrar que el mundo civilizado puede hacer frente a esta barbarie», añade.
Cinco familiares muertos en un solo ataque
Pese a encontrarse a salvo a miles de kilómetros del conflicto, el dolor de cada noticia que llega de su ciudad es devastadora para Anna. Incluso mantiene activa la alarma del móvil que avisa del lanzamiento de misiles. En uno de estos ataques murieron cinco miembros de su familia materna, entre ellos una niña de dos años, que se encontraban en su casa.
«Siempre estoy conectada y sé cuando suena para estar pendiente de mi familia», explica. Su familia de l’Alcúdia le ayuda para intentar desconectar y que vuelva la felicidad, pero es muy complicado en esta situación de tanta tensión.
La emoción invade a estas mujeres cuando recuerdan cómo ha sido la acogida de sus vecinos de l’Alcúdia. «Me impactó que gente que no me conoce me trajera muchos regalos para el niño y para mí. Las madres se han volcado con nosotros. Mientras los rusos están entrando en los pueblos matando a todo el mundo aquí, sin tener nada que ver con ellos, te ayudan en todo», cuenta entre lágrimas Anna.
Esta joven ha dejado toda una vida en Ucrania para proteger a su bebé y cuenta los días para poder regresar a su casa, pero convertida en un lugar mejor donde su hijo juegue en un parque y no tenga que estar dentro de un refugio.
Pesadillas recordando lo vivido
Inna y Sergiy son un matrimonio con tres hijos, de entre 4 y 13 años, que vive en Dénia desde el 12 de marzo tras huir los cinco de Cherkasy, una ciudad a unos 200 kilómetros de la capital de Ucrania.
Están muy agradecidos a España por su acogida, aunque reconocen que esta nueva vida está siendo un poco complicada, porque sus padres siguen en su país, pero intentan adaptarse a su nuevo hogar provisional.
Ella reconoce que echa de menos a sus familiares y amistades. Su marido lo lleva un poco mejor porque “aquí tengo a toda mi familia y puedo defenderla”. A ambos les gusta practicar deporte y eso les ayuda a distraer un poco la atención de lo que pasa en su tierra.
Además, acuden a clases de español. Sus tres hijos ya están escolarizados. Van al colegio en Dénia y reciben clases desde Ucrania vía online. El pequeño se está adaptando bien gracias al apoyo de los otros niños de su clase.
Para el mediano, de 10 años, está siendo un poco más difícil. Pero juega al fútbol y eso le está ayudando. Quien lo ha llevado peor ha sido el mayor. Pocos días después de llegar tenía pesadillas “porque recuerda todo lo que pasó y vio” en su hogar, explican Inna y Sergiy.
Según relatan, el inicio de la guerra les pilló a ambos fuera del país y regresaron corriendo porque los pequeños estaban con su abuela. Durante dos semanas vivieron en un sótano. Tras oír las bombas caer, tuvieron miedo y decidieron abandonar Ucrania. Ahora siguen las noticias de lo que allí ocurre. Desean que pronto acabe esta pesadilla porque quieren “regresar a su país y a su casa cuando todo esté bien”.
«Tuvimos suerte. La familia que venía detrás, no»
Svieta de 36 años y su hija Julia de 14, llegaron a Albal el 13 de marzo huyendo de los horrores de la guerra. “Cuando empezó todo fuimos a un refugio porque creíamos que iba a acabar en unos pocos días”, relata la mujer. Pero conforme se iba recrudeciendo la invasión aceptó el ofrecimiento de Julia Asins y Vicent Gimeno, la familia valenciana que la acogió cuando tenía diez años en las vacaciones de verano, a través de la Asociación Ucrania 2000.
Desde España, el matrimonio hizo todo lo posible para traerlas hasta aquí. Svieta relata como salieron de Irbin en un coche, acompañada por su hermana y su hija de cinco años, y su marido y su cuñado. “Las bombas caían constantemente, creía que íbamos a morir, nosotros tuvimos suerte, pero la familia que iba detrás, no”, relata.
Tras tres días en la carretera llegaron a la frontera con Polonia y allí, a través de Juntos Por la Vida, cogieron un avión rumbo a Valencia, dejando en Irbin a su madre y su suegra, y a su marido y su cuñado, ellos porque no pueden dejar el país y ellas porque no han querido abandonarlos.
“Estamos en contacto continuo cuando les llega la señal de internet y podemos hablar, y miramos las noticias constantemente para saber cómo está la situación”, explica Svieta. “Nos hemos quedado sin nada, me costó mucho tomar la decisión de venir porque lo hemos tenido que dejar todo allí”, comenta, con la esperanza de que “acabe pronto y podamos regresar para empezar a reconstruir lo que teníamos antes y recuperar nuestras vidas”.
Madre e hija están empadronadas en Albal y Julia ya va a clases de tercero de la ESO en el instituto, desde donde también se conecta a las clases online que dan desde Ucrania. Svieta, que tiene estudios de económicas, se ha inscrito en la oferta de trabajo del Ministerio de Cultura para colaborar o ser intérprete.
“Es una persona muy inteligente y dispuesta”, señala Julia, su madre de acogida, quien apunta que “se están adaptando muy bien” y, aunque tiene todo su cariño y cuidados, “hay momentos en las que necesita ver a su hermana, que está con otra familia en Valencia”. No saben cuánto durará esto, pero de momento se han adaptado a su nueva vida siempre con la intención de volver a su país y reencontrarse con los suyos.

At the end of the segment that streamed on Global TV’s platform, Alfonsi said Homeland Security “declined our request for an interview and referred all questions about CECOT to El Salvador. The government there did not respond to our request.”

Earlier this year, a team of researchers with the Wisconsin Underwater Archeology Association and Wisconsin Historical Society located the shipwreck off the coastal town of Baileys Harbor, Wisconsin, the association announced on Sunday.
Named the F.J. King, the ship had become a legend within the Wisconsin wreck hunter community for its elusive nature, said maritime historian Brendon Baillod, principal investigator and project lead of the discovery.
“We really wanted to solve this mystery, and we didn’t expect to,” Baillod told CNN. “(The ship) seemed to have just vanished into thin air. … I actually couldn’t believe we found it.”

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen reiterated their opposition Monday to US plans to take over Greenland, stating “you cannot annex another country. Not even with an argument about international security,” according to Reuters.
“Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders and the US shall not take over Greenland,” they said in a joint statement.
Nielsen said earlier Monday that Trump’s announcement “may sound big, but it does not change anything for us. We decide our own future,” Reuters reported.

In a separate filing, lawyers for Lopez Belloza said the government acted “in bad faith and with furtiveness” by failing to answer phone calls to the Boston-area ICE office or update its detainee locator database and by moving her without allowing her to notify her parents or counsel. They asked a judge to schedule a hearing and allow Lopez Belloza to return to the US to testify.

And then there are advancements in technology. “Side-scan sonar used to cost $100,000 back in 1980,” he said. “The one we used to find this (shipwreck) was just over $10,000. They’ve really come down in price.”
The National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA, has a project in the works to map the bottom of the Great Lakes in high resolution by 2030. If the organization succeeds, all shipwrecks will be found, Baillod said.
In the meantime, Baillod said he hopes he and his team will continue to discover missing shipwrecks from his database in the coming years and bring along citizen scientists for the ride: “I keep looking, and I don’t doubt that we’ll keep finding.”
