Los cotejos genéticos entre las muestras de ADN obtenidas en un puesto de Benetton ubicado en Epuyén (Argentina) y las extraídas a los padres de Santiago Maldonado dieron negativo, según informó ayer la Justicia Federal en Esquel. El estudio del Servicio de Huellas Digitales Genéticas de la Facultad de Farmacia y Bioquímica de la UBA echa por tierra una de las principales hipótesis de la policía argentina en el caso, la que indicaba que el activista Maldonado había sido herido de gravedad la madrugada del 21 de julio en la estancia El Maitén.
Hasta ahora se especulaba con que Maldonado había quedado malherido producto de un cuchillazo propinado por un trabajador rural de un sector del grupo Benetton -contra el que se inició la protesta mapuche en la que desapareció el joven-. El incidente tuvo lugar el 21 de julio durante un ataque del grupo radicalizado Resistencia Ancestral Mapuche (RAM). A las 2 de la madrugada de aquel día, dos individuos encapuchados entraron por la fuerza en la propiedad de Evaristo Jones. Este se defendió con su cuchillo logrando ocasionar una herida en uno de sus agresores.

Fue en esta fecha y zona que dejó de funcionar uno de los teléfonos adjudicados al joven. El sugerente dato le dio aire a la teoría de su participación en aquel asalto. Además, fuentes locales dejaron trascender hace una semana que se había conocido el caso de dos médicas que atendieron de urgencia a un herido en la zona y que otra buscó gasas en farmacias.
El SHDG, dirigido por el prestigioso genetista Daniel Corach, entregó al juez federal Guido Otranto el resultado del test varios días antes de lo anunciado por los propios científicos. Entretanto se había filtrado que Corach estaba de vacaciones, generando un rumor incómodo en medio de un caso tan delicado.
“(El centro de investigación) informó que el perfil genético de la persona que habría sido herida el 21 de julio de este año durante el ataque sufrido por Evaristo Jones en cercanías de Epuyen, en la provincia del Chubut, no tiene coincidencia con el perfil genético de un hijo biológico de Enrique Aníbal Maldonado y Stella Maris Peloso.
“Asimismo, se comunica que el Servicio de Huellas Digitales Genéticas continúa realizando los análisis y cotejos solicitados respecto de todas las muestras biológicas encontradas en los vehículos de Gendarmería Nacional involucrados en el procedimiento del 1 de agosto de este año, en las tres prendas que pertenecerían a Santiago Maldonado y en la vivienda en la que residió en la ciudad de El Bolsón de la provincia de Río Negro”, agrega.

At the end of the segment that streamed on Global TV’s platform, Alfonsi said Homeland Security “declined our request for an interview and referred all questions about CECOT to El Salvador. The government there did not respond to our request.”
The segment included sound bites from President Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. But it was clearly meant to be a story about Venezuelan men deported to El Salvador, not about the officials who implemented Trump’s mass deportation policy.

Alfonsi’s report was weeks in the making. Weiss screened it for the first time last Thursday night. The story was finalized on Friday, according to CBS sources, and was announced in a press release that same day.
On Saturday morning, Weiss began to change her mind about the story and raised concerns about its content, including the lack of responses from the relevant Trump administration officials.
But networks like CBS sometimes deliver taped programming to affiliates like Global TV ahead of time. That appears to be what happened in this case: The Friday version of the “60 Minutes” episode is what streamed to Canadian viewers.
The inadvertent Canadian stream is “the best thing that could have happened,” a CBS source told CNN on Monday evening, arguing that the Alfonsi piece is “excellent” and should have been televised as intended.
People close to Weiss have argued that the piece was imbalanced, however, because it did not include interviews with Trump officials.
Weiss told staffers on Monday, “We need to be able to get the principals on the record and on camera.” However, in an earlier memo to colleagues, Alfonsi asserted that her team tried, and their “refusal to be interviewed” was “a tactical maneuver designed to kill the story.”
At the end of the segment that streamed on Global TV’s platform, Alfonsi said Homeland Security “declined our request for an interview and referred all questions about CECOT to El Salvador. The government there did not respond to our request.”
The segment included sound bites from President Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. But it was clearly meant to be a story about Venezuelan men deported to El Salvador, not about the officials who implemented Trump’s mass deportation policy.

“We need Greenland for national security, not for minerals. We have so many sites for minerals and oil and everything,” Trump said, trying to make the case for annexing Greenland, despite its status as a self-governing territory of Denmark. “If you take a look at Greenland, you look up and down the coast, you have Russian and Chinese ships all over the place. We need it for national security. We have to have it,” he added.
During his Monday remarks, Trump went on to claim that Denmark has “spent no money” on Greenland and has “no military protection.”
While thanking Trump for his appointment, Landry said it was an “honor to serve you in this volunteer position to make Greenland a part of the US.” He also said that “this in no way affects” his position as Louisiana governor.
Trump has repeatedly stated that he wants to annex Greenland – a huge, resource-rich island in the Atlantic and self-governing territory of Denmark – claiming that this is needed for American security purposes.

Researchers know about the wrecks because reporting any commercial ship that sails on the lakes is required; from the early 19th century to the 20th century, about 40,000 ships sailed the Great Lakes, Baillod said.
There are about 6,000 commercial vessels on the seabed of the Great Lakes, lost to storms or other issues. In Lake Michigan alone, there are over 200 shipwrecks waiting to be discovered, according to Baillod, who has created a database of these ships over the past three decades.

Wrecks in the Great Lakes have been found since the 1960s, but in recent years the rate of these finds has accelerated greatly, in part due to media attention, clearer waters and better technology, Baillod said. Some wreck hunters and media outlets call this the golden age for shipwreck discoveries.
“There’s a lot more shipwreck awareness now on the Great Lakes, and people are looking down in the water at what’s on the bottom,” he added. The mollusks have filtered most of the lakes, turning them from their old greenish hue, which allowed for only a few feet of visibility, to clear blue. Now, the lakes have visibility of up to 50 to 100 feet (15 to 30.5 meters), Baillod explained.
“Tourism has popped up around paddle boarding and kayaking, and these shipwrecks are visible from the surface because the water is so clear,” he added.

And then there are advancements in technology. “Side-scan sonar used to cost $100,000 back in 1980,” he said. “The one we used to find this (shipwreck) was just over $10,000. They’ve really come down in price.”
The National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA, has a project in the works to map the bottom of the Great Lakes in high resolution by 2030. If the organization succeeds, all shipwrecks will be found, Baillod said.
In the meantime, Baillod said he hopes he and his team will continue to discover missing shipwrecks from his database in the coming years and bring along citizen scientists for the ride: “I keep looking, and I don’t doubt that we’ll keep finding.”

Several Republican senators noted on Thursday that constituents opposed a mid-decade redrawing of US House maps and that they questioned the wisdom or the precedent of joining the national redistricting battle. But a number of Republicans, including people who voted for the president three elections in a row, also gave deeply personal reasons over the last several weeks.

While law enforcement has not publicly linked the swatting or other threats to a political motive, Walker said he felt voting yes would reward wrongdoing and set a dangerous precedent.
Sen. Greg Goode, whose town hall in Terre Haute this fall revealed massive public opposition to mid-decade redistricting, said the new maps would splinter communities with similar interests. He also criticized “over-the-top pressure from inside the Statehouse and outside,” as well as “threats of violence, acts of violence.”
