La Policía del Capitolio de Estados Unidos ha detenido a 302 personas por protestar en edificios del Senado contra la posible confirmación del juez nominado al Tribunal Supremo, Brett Kavanaugh, acusado de abusos sexuales.
En un comunicado, el cuerpo informó de que «293 personas fueron detenidas por manifestarse ilegalmente», mientras que otras nueve por «amontonarse, obstruir e incomodar». Entre las personas detenidas se incluyen la actriz Amy Schumer y la modelo Emily Ratajkowski. Todos los arrestados han sido acusados de conglomeración y obstrucción, entre otros cargos.
Este mismo jueves, otras dos personas fueron detenidas por bloquear la entrada de la oficina del senador republicano Jeff Flake en la localidad de Phoenix. Los manifestantes reunidos junto a su oficina han instado al senador a votar en contra de la confirmación de Kavanaugh.
Kavanaugh, propuesto y defendido por Donald Trump, ha sido acusado de abusos sexuales por tres mujeres públicamente. Entre ellas, Christine Blasey Ford, quien la semana pasada testificó ante el Comité Judicial del Senado donde denunció que el juez trató de violarla en 1982.
La confirmación o no de Kavanaugh podría concretarse este sábado, cuando está programado el voto final del Senado, que tiene leve mayoría republicana con 51 de los 100 escaños. Los conservadores necesitan al menos medio centenar para garantizar la aprobación del juez.
La manifestación contra Kavanaugh, convocada por la organización Marcha de las Mujeres, se produjo un día antes del primer aniversario de la publicación de las informaciones del diario The New York Times que destaparon el amplio historial de abusos sexuales del productor Harvey Weinstein y que fueron el detonante del movimiento feminista #MeToo.
