Investigadores de la Universitat Politècnica de València y la Universidad de Granada han diseñado un nuevo sistema de bajo coste que detecta síntomas fatiga y situaciones de distracción de los conductores y que ayudaría a prevenir posibles accidentes en carretera. El equipo consta de cuatro sensores que monitorizan diferentes parámetros físicos del conductor y su posición al volante. A partir de estos datos, es capaz de generar una serie de señales acústicas si detecta algún riesgo, alertar al conductor y evitar así un posible accidente.
Tal y como explican los investigadores, la fatiga presenta una amplia variedad de síntomas: visión borrosa y aumento del índice de parpadeo; ansiedad y cambios en el comportamiento del conductor; incremento del número de movimientos para acomodarse en el asiento; y, lo que es más importante, aumenta el tiempo de reacción del conductor ante una determinada situación peligrosa en la carretera.
“Por esta razón, es importante contar con sistemas capaces de detectar estos síntomas, para ayudar a aumentar la seguridad del conductor. Ahora bien, la mayoría de las soluciones actuales se centran en el movimiento de los ojos y la detección de rostros, y nuestro sistema va más allá”, destaca Jaime Lloret, investigador del Instituto de Investigación para la Gestión Integrada de Zonas Costeras, en el campus de Gandia de la Universitat Politècnica de València.
Componentes
El sistema ideado por los investigadores de la Politècnica de València y la Universidad de Granada consta de una placa electrónica que actúa como unidad central de procesamiento, dos sensores de presión ubicados en el volante y otros dos que miden la temperatura del conductor -están por duplicado para monitorizar ambas manos; un sensor de luz en el reposacabezas que alertaría de posibles cabezadas al conducir; y el dispositivo (zumbador) que genera la alarma acústica en caso de detectar un estado de fatiga o distracción del conductor.
Todo esto se completa con un sensor de choque que detecta colisiones o frenado repentino y un pulsador colocado en el volante que sirve para resetear el sistema. “Después de generar una alarma el conductor tiene que deshabilitarla presionando el botón”, aclara Sandra Sendra, investigadora de la Universidad de Granada.
Funcionamiento
Los sensores están conectados a la placa electrónica central, que recibe datos de los sensores cada segundo y los procesa y analiza mediante un algoritmo, para comprobar si los valores recogidos permanecen dentro de los umbrales considerados normales o seguros. Cuando cualquiera de estos sensores supera estos umbrales, el algoritmo trata de definir si es una falsa alarma o si los sensores han registrado una posible situación de fatiga o distracción del conductor del vehículo. En este caso, se activa la señal acústica que sirve de alerta al conductor.
Todos los registros además quedan almacenados en una tarjeta micro-SD para una posible tarea de post-procesado, en caso de accidentes o estudios futuros.
Futuro
Este sistema fue presentado en la 1st EAI International Conference on Future Intelligent Vehicular Technologies, celebrada el pasado mes de septiembre en Portugal. El trabajo fue fue galardonado además como mejor artículo de la conferencia.
De cara al futuro, los investigadores plantean incorporar un pequeño receptor GPS para recoger la posición del vehículo y un módulo de tecnología inalámbrica que permita conectar el sistema con los smartphones de los conductores, de modo que en, en último término, el sistema sea capaz de generar una llamada de emergencia.
