Más de 3.000 inmigrantes fueron salvados en 24 operaciones en las últimas 48 horas en el Canal de Sicilia, la franja de mar que separa las costas de África de Italia, confirmaron este lunes a EFE fuentes de la Guardia Costera que coordina los rescates en esta zona del Mediterráneo.
Dichas fuentes explicaron que se prevé que el número aumentará ya que durante la madrugada y esta mañana se están llevando a cabo otros rescates.
En las operaciones del fin de semana han participado tanto unidades de la Guardia Costera, como de la misión europea Eunavformed y barcos de diferentes Organizaciones No Gubernamentales (ONG).
El buque Dattilo de la Guardia Costera rescató a 1.477 personas, que desembarcarán en las próximas horas en el puerto de Augusta, en Sicilia.
Durante la noche del sábado al domingo, el barco Aquarius de la ONG Sos Mediterranee y de Médicos sin Fronteras rescató a 946 personas que se encontraban a la deriva en 7 lanchas neumáticas y dos pateras y esperan llegar mañana al puerto de Catania.
En lo que va de año han sido salvados 15.852 inmigrantes, lo que supone un 67 % más que en el mismo periodo del año anterior, según los datos del Ministerio del Interior.
La emergencia de la inmigración no cesa y el Gobierno italiano calcula que en este año llegarán a Italia 250.000 inmigrantes, 70.000 más que en el pasado año.
