Con la nueva técnica, denominada pericardiotomía percutánea con balón, solo se precisa anestesia local, una ligera sedación y analgesia. Este tratamiento consiste en extraer el líquido acumulado mediante una punción que se realiza por debajo del arco costal izquierdo.
Para ello, una vez colocado el drenaje pericárdico con control ecográfico y extraído parte del líquido, se introduce, con control radiológico, un catéter balón que al dilatarse rasga el pericardio en un punto concreto, permitiendo el drenaje espontáneo del líquido. A continuación, se monitoriza la resolución del derrame pericárdico con control ecocardiográfico.
El responsable de la selección de pacientes, la realización de esta prueba y el seguimiento posterior es un equipo multidisciplinar formado por especialistas y enfermeros de la sección de Cardiología y del servicio de Radiología del hospital.
