(27/05/2018) La Consellería de Vivienda, Obras Públicas y Vertebración del Territorio, a través de la Dirección General de Obras Públicas, Transporte y Movilidad, será el organismo coordinador de las diferentes actuaciones para impulsar el desarrollo de la Vía Verde del Serpis, un itinerario ciclopeatonal de 56 km de longitud, con origen en Alcoy y punto final en el Puerto de Gandía.
El director general de Obras Públicas, Transporte y Movilidad, Carlos Domingo, ha explicado que tras una reunión con los representantes de las administraciones interesadas en activar la Vía Verde del Serpis, se ha decidido que sea la conselleria «quien se encargue también de planificar y definir los elementos que den una identidad común a todo el itinerario de la Vía Verde».
En esta reunión, a la que asistieron en representación del Consorcio de las Comarcas Centrales, el alcalde de Alcoy, Antonio Francés Pérez y la alcaldesa de Gandía Diana Morant; el diputado de Carreteras de la Diputación de Valencia, Pablo Seguí, y un representante de la Diputación de Alicante, se puso de manifiesto la importancia de las Vías Verdes en la Comunitat «como motor de actividades de ocio y turismo y como dinamizadora de las economías locales, además de su amplia aceptación social», ha indicado Domingo.
Antiguo corredor ferroviario
La Vía Verde del Serpis recorre once municipios de las comarcas de l´Alcoià, Comtat y la Safor y supone la recuperación del antiguo corredor ferroviario que conectaba Alcoy con el Puerto de Gandía, para su uso como vía ciclopeatonal. Para el director general, «se trata de un itinerario fácil y de cómodo recorrido para el tráfico no motorizado, como bicicletas, paseos a pie o a caballo, ya que el trazado es muy regular y con poca pendiente».
Asimismo ha subrayado que «será un canal básico de comunicación del turismo de la costa con el turismo de interior, además atraviesa varios cascos urbanos lo cual implicará la conexión directa de los vecinos con la vía verde y potenciará económicamente estos municipios».
La vía original discurría a lo largo de 53.355m y tenía un desnivel total de 530m entre Alcoy y Gandía. El tren hacía parada en las estaciones de Alcoy, Cocentaina, Muro de Alcoy, Gaianes, Beniarrés, Lorcha, Villalonga, Potríes, Beniarjó, Almoines, Gandía y Puerto de Gandía en El Grao de Gandía.
Cabe destacar la existencia de siete túneles, seis viaductos (de los cuales en la actualidad solo se conservan los estribos y las pilas intermedias) y ocho puentes de mampostería con una longitud variable entre 12 y 60 metros. «Esta actuación intentará recuperar y acondicionar algunos de estos elementos patrimoniales adaptándolos en la medida de lo posible al diseño inicial», ha apuntado Domingo.
En origen, esta línea transportaba materias primas procedentes de importación desde el Puerto de Gandía hasta las industrias existentes en las comarcas interiores. En la primera mitad del siglo XX, la función principal de la línea pasó a ser el transporte de pasajeros. La competencia de la carretera motivó el decaimiento de la línea ferroviaria, que se cerró en 1969.
Según el director general «esta vía facilitará el conocimiento y disfrute de la variedad de paisajes por los que discurre. Por una parte, recorre dos zonas de gran valor medioambiental: 4,80 kilómetros por el Parque Natural de la Sierra de Mariola, que está declarado como Lugar de Interés Comunitario y Zona de Especial Protección para Aves, y otros 10,1 kilómetros por el desfiladero de Río Serpis que corta la sierra de la Safor, que a pesar de no estar protegido por ninguna figura especial es una paraje de gran valor ecológico».
Además, ha añadido, «en el primer tramo se puede disfrutar de un paisaje de media montaña donde predomina el cultivo de olivos; el segundo tramo discurre por el desfiladero del Río Serpis, con una orografía mucho más abrupta y boscosa; y finalmente, en el tercer tramo, hasta la costa de Gandía se puede disfrutar de un paisaje completamente llano caracterizado por el cultivo de cítricos».
