El presidente de EEUU ha autorizado reforzar el número de militares destinados en la frontera sur, con más de 5.000 soldados, para evitar la entrada de los miles de personas que buscan entrar en el país y que ya están en México.
El presidente estadounidense, Donald Trump, ha advertido a la caravana de migrantes que salió desde Honduras y se dirige a la frontera sur del país que las Fuerzas Armadas les «están esperando» con un efectivo compuesto por 5.200 soldados en lo que consideró una «invasión», como un alarde más de su criminalización hacia los hondureños que huyen de la pobreza de su país.
«¡Esto es una invasión de nuestro país y nuestras Fuerzas Armadas os están esperando!», dijo Trump en un mensaje de Twitter. El mandatario insistió en que «muchos pandilleros y alguna gente muy mala» se encuentran entre los migrantes, sin ofrecer detalles al respecto. «Por favor, den la vuelta, no serán admitidos en EEUU a menos que sigan el proceso legal», subrayó.
Trump ha amenazando ya con enviar el Ejército a la frontera, y ha asegurado que recortará «sustancialmente» la ayuda económica que concede a Guatemala, Honduras y El Salvador como represalia por el avance de los migrantes, al tiempo que ha arremetido contra México por no detenerla. De esta forma ejemplifica y materializa sus declaraciones en las que constataba que el líder estadounidense haría todo lo posible para frenar la caravana.
En una rueda de prensa, el comandante del Mando Norte del Departamento de Defensa estadounidense, el general Terrence J. O’Shaughnessy, explicó que 800 militares ya están en camino a la frontera suroeste del país y aseguró que, para finales de la semana, el número de efectivos será de más de 5.000.
«Vamos a endurecer la frontera», avisó O’Shaughnessy, quien explicó que los militares llevarán allí sus capacidades de «planificación militar», así como tres helicópteros destinados a transportar a los agentes fronterizos de un lugar a otro y materiales para levantar tiendas.
Sin embargo, una ley estadounidense de 1878 prohíbe usar a los soldados para tareas de seguridad y orden público a nivel nacional. Por eso, indicó O’Shaughnessy, los militares se limitarán a apoyar a los agentes fronterizos en operaciones aéreas para detectar actividades ilegales, así como en labores mecánicas, como reparación de vehículos, y ofrecerán cuidados médicos a los inmigrantes que lo necesiten.
Por otro lado, el presidente estadounidense ya había vertido varias amenazas sobre los migrantes, que no cejaron en su recorrido.
La caravana migrante de centroamericanos suspendió este domingo su salida desde San Pedro Tapanatepec, en el sureño estado mexicano de Oaxaca, para reorganizar sus mecanismos de seguridad después de que anoche una trifulca dejara a un migrante herido y generara preocupación entre las más de 7.000 personas que conforman el contingente.
Las autoridades mexicanas no pudieron evitar el asesinato de un hondureño por parte de agentes antidisturbios guatemaltecos cuando los migrantes rompieron la valla fronteriza entre un país y otro, pero desde México han anunciado un plan para dar asistencia humanitaria y acompañamiento a la caravana migrante, en donde se encuentran unos 2.300 niños, que recorre estos días el sur del país, y prevén que llegue a la capital a partir del 2 de noviembre.
