Sheila Lucía Malvar (teleoperadora en el servicio de tele asistencia de Madrid) y María Jesús Varela (directora de la fundación ONCE para América Latina), reconocen el recelo que sienten por su ceguera a salir solas por si son agredidas.
Hay una turbación de la que no se habla pero que cala hasta lo más hondo. Es la que palpan las mujeres con discapacidad al ir solas por la calle, sobre todo de noche, y poder toparse con un acosador, agresor o violador. Y es que este colectivo, conformado en nuestro país según datos de Diversis por 2.300.200 féminas, comienza a hablar en voz alta de la sensación de desasosiego que les produce vivir en una sociedad machista que usa y disfruta del cuerpo de las mujeres a su antojo y de la doble indefensión que sienten por su situación personal.
Propensión a la violencia de género
Y su miedo no es para menos. Basta ver informes sobre violencia de género como los del Parlamento Europeo acerca de la situación de las mujeres de los grupos minoritarios en la Unión Europea, que recalcan que el 80% de ellas son víctimas de violencia, y que son cuatro veces más propensas que otras mujeres a sufrir violencia sexual. Es más, esta misma fuente especifica que “el mayor riesgo de sufrir violencia está directamente relacionado con factores que aumentan la dependencia y desempoderamiento de las mujeres con discapacidad, proceso que acaba con la privación de sus derechos fundamentales. Muchos de estos factores también conducen a la impunidad y la invisibilidad del problema”.
Una impunidad que tal y como comenta Sheila Lucía Malvar (teleoperadora en el servicio de tele asistencia a las personas mayores solas o dependientes de Madrid) de 31 años y ciega de nacimiento, hay que combatir denunciándola. “Existe la creencia generalizada de que las mujeres con discapacidad no sufrimos acoso o agresiones sexuales ya que no es posible que a nadie se le ocurra molestarnos.
Pero esto no es así”, comenta a Público. “Puede que el miedo sea difícil de valorar como concepto en la sociedad. Supongo que es más incierto, pero no puedo cuantificarlo sin menospreciar el del resto de personas. Teniendo en cuenta que la mayor parte de las veces se necesitan las imágenes que proyectamos para identificar nuestros estados de ánimo, deseos o sentimientos, las personas que no vemos tenemos que aprender a agudizar los sentidos y ponernos en una situación de mayor alerta ante un peligro. No sé si por la cantidad de atención que tengo que prestar, la ausencia de cierta información o una mezcla de ambas, el resultado para mí, es un desgaste de energía bastante grande”, reconoce.
Desgaste que también siente María Jesús Varela, directora de la fundación ONCE para América Latina y de 44 años de edad. “Yo hago las cosas que me apetecen pero a partir de ciertas horas prefiero volver a casa en taxi por propia seguridad. No ver es sinónimo de poder hacerse más daño cuando tratas de huir porque te puedes dar un golpe y también de que nunca puedes saber, como alguien que si ve, si hay algún individuo que te puede hacer daño. Además la discapacidad siempre te hace más vulnerable físicamente”, dice.
En nombre de todas
Por eso ambas han decidido poner voz tanto a sus vivencias personales como a las de otras tantas mujeres que conocen. Sienten que lo que no se nombra no existe. Y se niegan a que la sociedad no sea consciente de su situación. “Es importante que se empiece a hablar de esto porque la discapacidad es transversal a todo y hasta hace nada no se han mencionado una serie de situaciones y dificultades como este miedo que también va con nosotras”, resume Varela.
Y es que dichas mujeres consideran que el que la cultura de la violación campe a sus anchas hace daño a la población y por ende a ellas. “Cada día nos encontramos con limitaciones para volver a casa de noche. Si a esto sumamos todo lo que está pasando la cosa es aún mucho peor. Por ejemplo una chica en silla de ruedas por las noches tiene menos servicios de autobús y por lo tanto menos paradas que la dejan más lejos de casa o de su estación. Las limitaciones para huir o defenderse son mínimas o nulas. Y de las que tienen discapacidad intelectual, que con cualquier mentira que les digan se la puede llevar a cualquier lugar, ya no hablamos”, subraya la directora de la fundación ONCE para América Latina. “De la misma manera que no ves a la persona, tampoco ves sus intenciones. Esto pasa cuando por ejemplo viene alguien a ayudarte a cruzar. Tratas de pensar que todo el mundo es bueno pero no es lo mismo que quieran ayudarte a cruzar una calle o un semáforo a las doce de la mañana que a las doce de noche. Los semáforos a esa hora de la noche quitan el sonido y una nunca sabe con qué intenciones viene un hombre. Todo eso te genera inquietud. Vas por la calle y piensas ¿por qué no me adelanta? y entonces frenas tú la velocidad para que pase por delante porque no sabes si va cerca por algo malo o no”, cuenta Varela.
Esta alta directiva también reconoce que a pesar del miedo que tiene, da gracias cuando está en España, “porque es todo un paraíso”, en comparación con la realidad con la que se topan las mujeres con discapacidad en Latinoamérica. “Por desgracia allí la sociedad es mucho más machista y te encuentras con mujeres que son tocadas en autobuses o el metro o agarradas, abusadas y tiradas en medio de la calle. Hay mujeres, no todas porque por desgracia la economía de la subsistencia con la que cuentan no les da para nada, que evitan el transporte público donde el acoso es brutal o que acaban desplazándose en taxis de confianza para ir a trabajar porque han tenido situaciones de muchísimo miedo e incluso de sentirse perseguidas y vigiladas por hombres que saben de sus rutinas. Allí te ocurre y sucede que te violan. Aquí tenemos el temor”, subraya.
Paradójicamente en el caso de Varela no ha sido en Latinoamérica donde ha sentido miedo. “Hace unos años yendo en el metro por la noche con otra amiga a una fiesta, un hombre se nos cruzó y trató de tirarme por las escaleras porque iba bebido. Intentó perseguirnos y tocarnos el culo. Entonces me planté frente a él, le insulte y amenacé con el bastón diciéndole que si tenía huevos a hacerme algo que lo hiciera. ¡Ya ves tú el daño que le podía hacer yo con mi bastón, pero el tema era tratar de hacer tiempo para que viniera alguien ayudarnos! No sabes, no ves a la persona y te sientes incapaz”, rememora.
Una realidad de la que Sheila Lucía también puede hablar. En su caso han sido varias las situaciones vividas. “Recuerdo en el metro que un chico se sentó a mi lado estando el vagón totalmente vacío. Me sentí muy agobiada porque estaba casi sentado sobre mí y yo no sabía cómo decirle nada porque me daba miedo la posibilidad de ofenderle. Finalmente me puso la mano sobre la rodilla y cuando me volví a decirle que me dejase en paz, me dio un beso. Sentí mucho miedo porque estaba sola, así que tuve que bajarme del metro, esperar al siguiente y llegar tarde a mi compromiso. Yendo también en el metro he tenido problemas con una persona indigente, y esto no lo cuento porque fuera indigente, sino porque fue lo que me pasó. Yo estaba sentada y sin querer se me cayó el bastón hacia él. Cuando me lo fue a acercar resultó muy invasivo, además me levantó el abrigo para tocarme la mano y fue muy incómodo. El metro estaba lleno de gente pero nadie hizo nada, solo un chico le dijo algo y él se justificó diciendo que ya se me veía mayor de edad. El otro chico se indignó muchísimo y empezaron a pelearse”, comenta.
Por último esta teleoperadora recuerda el acoso en plena calle de un señor que empezó a hablar con ella. “Era mayor, y me contó que estaba casado, que tenía una academia e hijas más o menos de mi edad. Me pidió el número de teléfono y dijo que era para tomar un café y charlar. Me molestó bastante porque sé que a cualquier mujer de mi edad que no tuviera discapacidad no se lo habría pedido. No veo la forma de salir de estas situaciones, simplemente me niego a cualquier cosa y espero que el momento pase lo más rápido posible”, reconoce.
Un #cuéntalo marcado por la discapacidad
Cuando preguntamos a ambas si creen que si se pusiera en marcha un movimiento en las redes sociales como el de #Cuéntalo o el #Metoo en redes sociales vinculado a su colectivo, nos íbamos a escandalizar, su respuesta es contundente. “A la sociedad se le iba a caer la cara de vergüenza no solo por descubrir una realidad totalmente oculta, sino porque los acosadores aprenderían la diferencia entre un gesto amable y la intimidación”, dice Malvar. Por su parte Varela añade que “nos echaríamos las manos a la cabeza, dirían aquello de ¡cómo puede hacerse eso a mujeres con discapacidad porque quizá impacte el doble!, pero lo cierto es que esto para desgracia nuestra pasa”.
Estas dos mujeres también muestran su preocupación por una sociedad que cosifica, maltrata y viola a la mujer tanto con discapacidad como sin ella. “Me preocupa que vaya en aumento, que a pesar de la cantidad de información que se hace pública a este respecto, tengamos cada vez más experiencias de amigas cercanas que son totalmente denigrantes para cualquier persona”, dice Sheila Lucía. A lo que María Jesús suma la intranquilidad que le produce la educación, o más bien la falta de ella, que reciben ahora los jóvenes. “Es inquietante que se tomen las agresiones como una diversión y que nosotras tengamos que enfrentarnos a esta tóxica educación con autoprotección y miedo. No es nada justo”.
Sea como sea lo que ellas tienen claro es que callar no es la solución. “Si nos ocurren estas cosas tenemos que contarlas. No tenemos que avergonzarnos independientemente de que con nuestra discapacidad tengamos un doble riesgo a que nos suceda algo. Tenemos que contarlo aunque nos haga sentirnos débiles porque en ese contarlo en el que reconocemos nuestras limitaciones también lanzamos un mensaje de cara a las familias con hijas con discapacidad. Y es que no podemos caer en la sobreprotección. Nada de esto ha de impedir que sus hijas no salgan a la calle o dejen de hacer su vida porque tiene más riesgos. Se trata de vivir de la forma más segura posible, pero vivir siempre”, relata Varela.
Por su parte Malvar lanza este último mensaje. “Procuro que el hecho de ser mujer con discapacidad no sea un impedimento para hacer todo aquello con lo que puedo sentirme bien o realizada como persona, pero es cierto que a la hora de manifestarme ante una situación de acoso, me siento oprimida ya que vivo en una sociedad en la que se considera que como mujer exagero y como discapacitada confundo las cosas”, dice. De ahí que quiera aprovechar esta oportunidad para decir a todas las mujeres “que el acoso es algo muy serio y que deberíamos evitar la demagogia para evitar que lleguemos a ridiculizarlo. A todas las mujeres con discapacidad me gustaría decirles que somos igual de mujeres y que no deberíamos aceptar como válida ninguna atención que nosotras no hayamos buscado o con la que no nos sintamos cómodas. Tenemos todo el derecho a no conformarnos con nada ni con nadie si no estamos a gusto. Es obvio que el acoso existe de manera generalizada para todas las mujeres, pero también hay una parte de acosadores que solo acosan a las mujeres con discapacidad. Me gustaría decir a esos hombres que si tienen algún tipo de complejo de inferioridad o problema de autoestima, deberían de solucionárselo y dejarnos en paz al resto”, finaliza.
