Luciano Benjamín Menéndez, el genocida vivo de mayor rango militar, murió ayer poco antes del mediodía en una cama del Hospital Militar de Córdoba. Conocido como “el Cachorro, “el Chacal” o “la Hiena”, el ex general y ex jefe del Tercer Cuerpo de Ejército durante la última dictadura cívico-militar se llevó consigo el insólito récord mundial de condenas a prisión perpetua por delitos de lesa humanidad: tenía 14, más otras dos a una veintena de años.
“Yo no tengo antecedentes penales. Los únicos que tengo son los que ustedes me pusieron en estos juicios, que son artificiales. Yo nunca he cruzado ni un semáforo en rojo”, dijo, con el hilo de voz que le quedaba, de pie ante el Tribunal Oral Federal 1, el pasado el 22 de noviembre. Esos eran sus parámetros. Las miles de personas secuestradas, torturadas, violadas, asesinadas y desaparecidas en las diez provincias que tuvo bajo su arbitrio y pulsión de muerte no constituían para él delito alguno. Nunca se arrepintió. Nunca dio ninguna pista sobre dónde están los cuerpos que ordenó desaparecer. Ni de los bebés robados a sus madres recién paridas. Nunca. Ni aun cuando desde 2008, en su primer juicio y condena a prisión perpetua y cárcel común, debió acostumbrarse a ver hasta en la sopa el rostro de la Abuela de Plaza de Mayo Sonia Torres, en su reclamo constante por el nieto que le arrebataron. O tuvo que escuchar la voz cantarina y plural de “la Emi” D´Ambra, quien esperó el final del Megajuicio La Perla Campo de la Ribera para morirse, y hasta el último día de sus 87 años le exigió que dijera dónde enterró a los más de 2.500 desaparecidos que masacraron en esos campos de concentración y exterminio.
No. Hasta ese último día de noviembre de 2017 en que se paró frente al Tribunal y los huesos de su espalda mostraron el ya afilado mapa de su esqueleto bajo el saco, no se arrepintió. Tampoco negó sus muertos. Los ninguneó.
El “duro”
Nacido en Lobos, provincia de Buenos Aires, el 19 de junio de 1919, el hombre que murió ayer perteneció a una familia castrense cuyos principales ancestros –cada quien en su tiempo histórico– fueron entusiastas genocidas junto a Julio Argentino Roca en la llamada Campaña del Desierto; o participaron del bombardeo y masacre de ciudadanos de a pie en la Plaza de Mayo en 1955 para derrocar al gobierno constitucional de Juan Domingo Perón.
Llegado su turno, Luciano Benjamín Menéndez fue el brazo más duro de la dictadura presidida por Jorge Rafael Videla. Tanto fue así que en 1979 terminó preso en un cuartel en Entre Ríos cuando intentó derrocar sin éxito a su propio jefe al que consideraba “blando”. Y fue vox pópuli entre sus subordinados y cómplices que el propio Videla le temía. Una versión que terminó comprobándose durante el Megajuicio que duró casi cuatro años. Allí se supo que cuando las hordas de Menéndez secuestraron a Carlos Escobar, el hijo de un militar amigo de Videla desde los 13 años, ante los desesperados ruegos del padre ante su compañero de liceo, el dictador sólo atinó a disculparse: “si está en el área de Menéndez no puedo hacer nada”.
Ese es el Menéndez que el arriero José Julián Solanille vio desde la “Loma del Torito” en los campos de La Perla presidiendo el fusilamiento masivo de decenas de jóvenes maniatados. Y también el Menéndez que en abril de 2013 contempló –doblado sobre sí mismo, las mandíbulas tensas– cómo ese hombre de campo, ese “nadie” que solía herrarle los caballos en los tiempos en que su sólo nombre era sinónimo de poder absoluto; ofreció el testimonio judicial más contundente sobre sus crímenes.
“Estaba con otro compañero en la Loma del Torito –contó Solanille–. Habíamos visto la fosa cavada. Unos cuatro metros por cuatro. Tenían a toda la gente en dos filas. No sé, eran muchas personas. Como cien. Algunos vestidos, otros totalmente desnudos. Estaba Menéndez. El había llegado en un (Ford) Falcon blanco. Yo lo había visto. Sabía que se venía algo grande. Y ahí estaba, con su fusil. No lo vi disparar. Pero él dio la orden. La gente estaba encapuchada o vendada o tenían unos anteojos… Los que no tenían nada, los que podían ver, gritaban. Unos hasta corrieron. Pero los mataron por la espalda. Ahí nos rajamos con mi amigo. Estábamos cagados de miedo. Nos habíamos arrastrado hasta arriba de la loma, pero bajamos corriendo. Después se ve que los quemaron. Tiraron explosivos. El humo con ese olor espantoso se vino para mi casa. Era insoportable”.
Era el Menéndez que con sólo una palabra, o sólo un gesto podía dar vida o muerte. El que aterrorizada vio a los pies de su cama del Hospital Militar –el mismo en el que ayer murió el genocida–, la sobreviviente Teresita Piazza de Córdoba mientras la mantuvieron secuestrada. Durante el juicio, la mujer contó cómo la apalearon y le trompearon el vientre aún sabiéndola embarazada. Y cómo, cuando casi muere, la esposaron a una cama de hospital. “Me desperté y ahí estaba cuando abrí los ojos y lo ví. Era Menéndez. Me dijo que me porte bien y que si no lo hacía me llevarían de nuevo adonde estaba. Yo sólo lo miré. Me quedé en silencio”.
Ese era el Menéndez que paseaba el taconeo de sus botas lustradas por los mosaicos terracota de La Perla mientras los que iban a morir temblaban debajo de las vendas de sus ojos, con el hedor del miedo envolviéndolo todo. El Menéndez que ordenó el secuestro, tortura y decapitación del ex ministro del Interior del presidente Arturo Frondizi, Miguel Hugo Vaca Narvaja, de 59 años y padre de 12 hijos. El mismo que ordenó y permitió la exhibición de esa cabeza que fue mantenida en formol hasta que la arrojaron a las vías de un tren.
El Menéndez que mantuvo prisionero en las mazmorras de su propia estancia, dentro de los campos de La Perla, al abogado laboralista Salomón Gerchunoff, de quien el sobreviviente Piero di Monte contó que le ordenaron llevarle una sopa. “Estaba en muy mal estado. Le ayudé a tomarla. Le acaricié la cabeza y le dije que no lo matarían. Pero él no podía creerlo”. Menéndez usaba ese edificio con pretensiones de castillo medieval durante los fines de semana. Recién en 2014 se supo que está a pocos kilómetros (una hora de caminata) de los hornos de cal donde el Equipo Argentino de Antropología Forense (EAAF) encontró, el 21 de octubre de ese año, los restos óseos –cuasi molidos– de cuatro jóvenes militantes de la Juventud Peronista Universitaria: Lila Gómez Granja, Aldredo Sinópoli Gritti; Ricardo Enrique Saibene Parra y Luis Agustín Santillán Zevi. Hornos en los que un puñado de chicos había encontrado una mano mientras jugaban en 1977, y que fue motivo de que sus familias fuesen desalojadas de esos campos. Uno de esos pibes, Andrés Quiroga, casi cuarenta años después fue quien se animó a dar testimonio. Quien se acercó al Espacio Memoria La Perla, y dio la pista a los antropólogos.
El Menéndez poderoso de los fusilamientos y estaqueamientos a los 31 presos políticos de la UP1, en el invierno de 1976. El que se creyó impune. El que ordenó “que todos hagan todo”, para que nadie tuviese las manos limpias de sangre y el pacto de silencio sellara los crímenes que diezmaron una generación y dañaron para siempre a otras tantas.
Ya en democracia, y muy lejos de correrse de la escena, apareció el Menéndez de los actos públicos. Con Eduardo Angeloz coincidieron en las veladas de la peña El Ombú, adonde acudían muchos de los cómplices civiles y eclesiásticos de la represión; mientras que con el ex gobernador Ramón Mestre, el cardenal Raúl Francisco Primatesta y el actual funcionario macrista Oscar Aguad compartían palcos.
De hienas y dinosaurios
La lucha de casi cuarenta años de los organismos de derechos humanos, más la decisión política del gobierno de Néstor Kirchner que anuló las leyes de impunidad, lo llevó para siempre a los juicios, y lo convirtió en el militar más veces condenado.
En su pose pétrea, los párpados hinchados y semientornados que recordaban a los reptiles prehistóricos de la isla Galápagos, Menéndez pasó por los diez juicios que se le hicieron en Córdoba desde que el 24 de julio de 2008 recibió su primera condena a prisión perpetua en cárcel común.
En 2010, se lo vio dormir hombro a hombro con Videla durante el juicio por los fusilados en la cárcel UP1, y también defender todas las veces que pidió hablar, lo que él consideraba “una guerra mundial”.
Nada parecía sacarlo de su su eje. Su compostura lo distinguía de los demás reos. A veces, apenas parecía respirar. Su método de resistencia era la economía de movimientos. Un duermevela imperturbable. Sólo dos temas le quitaban la compostura: cuando lo llamaban ladrón, como ocurrió con el caso de la empresa Mackentor, el “papel prensa” cordobés; y cuando declaraba algún miembro de la familia Vaca Narvaja. En la audiencia en que Ana María, una de las hijas mayores del ex ministro decapitado mencionó que además de Cachorro “lo llamaban la Hiena” y leyó documentación de la Conadep sobre lo que había afirmado; Menéndez terminó descompuesto de la bronca, despeinado y golpeándose las rodillas con los muebles de la sala para llegar al estrado de su defensora oficial.
Hasta estos días, y según datos de la Procuradoría de Crímenes contra la Humanidad, Menéndez había sido condenado 16 veces: 14 de ellas a prisión perpetua. Estaba procesado en otras 49 causas, y en 13 de ellas esperaba juicio oral. También estaba bajo investigación en otros 25 expedientes.
Quién sabe si a los pies de su cama de hospital –como él hizo con Teresita– pudo ver los rostros o sentir la presencia de los muertos que mató. De lo que sí se tiene certeza es que Menéndez fue el brazo armado de una de las etapas más atroces de nuestra Historia. Una que tuvo y tiene cómplices civiles y eclesiásticos. Y que con él, ayer, la muerte se llevó a uno de sus mejores esbirros. (Marta Platía- Pagina 12)
