A veces los supervivientes llegaban hasta el 30%. En los momentos de mayor horror del campo nazi en Polonia, durante la primavera y el verano de 1944 cuando fueron deportados, y asesinados en su mayoría, 400.000 judíos húngaros, los vagones llegaban constantemente y en cualquier momento.
Por motivos que se desconocen, todo ese proceso fue fotografiado por dos SS en mayo de 1944. Después de una serie de casualidades increíbles, las imágenes fueron recuperadas por una superviviente de los campos de la muerte, Lilly Jacob-Zelmanovic Meier, que acabó por donarlos al Yad Vashem, el museo de la Shoah situado en Jerusalén. Este viernes se conmemora a las seis millones de víctimas del Holocausto –la fecha es precisamente la de la liberación de este campo de exterminio, el 27 de enero de 1945 por las tropas soviéticas– y merece la pena pararse a contemplar el horror cotidiano que muestran aquellas fotos, la rutina del asesinato masivo, la «banalidad del mal» en acción, por recuperar la expresión que Hannah Arendt acuñó durante el juicio contra el responsable de esa deportación masiva, Adolf Eichmann.
Las 193 fotos ocupan 56 páginas. Algunas de las imágenes se perdieron porque Meier las entregó a personas que reconocieron a familiares que aparecían en ellas. El Yad Vashem recibió como donación recientemente una de ellas. En las imágenes, tomadas por los SS Ernst Hofmann y Bernhard Walter, se refleja todo el proceso de la muerte, salvo el final. Las fotos se detienen en la entrada de las cámaras de gas. El trabajo de estos dos soldados alemanes era fotografiar a los presos que estaban destinados a los trabajos forzados. De aquellos que eran enviados directamente a su muerte no se guardaba ninguna evidencia.
Los judíos que aparecen en las imágenes son húngaros y provienen del gueto de la ciudad de Beregovo, hoy en Ucrania, aunque entonces pertenecía a Hungría. Lilly Jacob-Zelmanovic Meier fue deportada a Auschwitz a los 18 años. Separada de su familia en el andén, nunca volvió a verlos. Provenía de un pueblo cercano a Beregovo y llegó al campo de exterminio en el mismo momento en que fueron tomadas una parte de las fotos, el 26 de mayo de 1944.
Ella sobrevivió a Auschwitz y a las marchas de la muerte a las que los nazis sometieron a los presos según avanzaban los ejércitos aliados. Fue liberada en el campo de Dora-Mittelbau, cerca de Buchenwald, en Turingia, a unos 700 kilómetros de Auschwitz. En 1983, lo donó al Yad Vashem gracias a la mediación del superviviente del Holocausto y cazador de nazis Serge Klarsfeld. Falleció en Estados Unidos el 17 de diciembre de 1999. No existe ningún documento parecido.
El Álbum de Auschwitz muestra la llegada de los trenes, el proceso de selección y el lugar donde iban destinadas las pertenencias de los asesinados –conocido como Canadá–. Los nazis y la solución final (Crítica), el historiador y autor de documentales para la BBC Laurence Rees describe así aquel verano del horror: «El campo se convirtió en el escenario del mayor exterminio que ha conocido la historia humana». «Entre la primavera y comienzo del verano de 1944, Auschwitz llegó hasta el límite de su capacidad de exterminio y lo superó en el más horrible y frenético periodo de asesinatos que conocería el campo», prosigue Rees, quien recoge en sus libros testimonios tanto de víctimas como de verdugos.
En las fotos se reconocen perfectamente los rostros, la ropa, las estrellas de David, los enseres que llevan los deportados, las mujeres con pañuelos en la cabeza, los niños con gorra, los hombres con sombreros. Ahora que los últimos supervivientes van desapareciendo poco a poco, al igual que los perpetradores, el Holocausto se enfrenta a tres peligros: el olvido, la deshumanización de las víctimas cuando dejen de tener voz, y la negación.
