El compositor, guitarrista y cantante estadounidense Chuck Berry, uno de los padres del rock and roll, ha fallecido este sábado a los 90 años, ha informado el departamento de policía del condado de Saint Charles, en Misuri (EE UU), en su perfil de Facebook.
«El Departamento de Policía del condado de Saint Charles tristemente confirma la muerte de Charles Edward Anderson Berry Sr, más conocido como el legendario músico Chuck Berry», señala la policía en el comunicado. Los agentes recibieron una alerta por una emergencia sanitaria a las 12.40 hora local (las 18.40, hora peninsular española) en la calle Buckner. En la vivienda, los trabajadores de los servicios de emergencia hallaron a un hombre inconsciente y, a pesar de haber intentado reanimarlo, no pudieron hacer nada por su vida. Su muerte fue certificada a las 13.26 hora local (19.26, hora peninsular española).
Charles Edward Anderson Berry nació en 1926 en San Luis (EE UU). Su madre era profesora y su padre, contratista y pastor baptista. Desde pequeño, se acercó al blues y, a principios de la década de los cincuenta, arrancó su carrera profesional. De su guitarra pionera han bebido los más grandes del rock. Grupos como The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelín o AC/DC han admitido abiertamente que Berry, uno de los padres del rock and roll, fue uno de sus referentes.
El artista fue uno de los fundadores del rock gracias al tema Maybellene, lanzado en 1955. De hecho, en su biografía del Salón de la Fama del Rock, se lee: «Después de Elvis Presley, solo Chuck Berry ha tenido más influencia a la hora de dar forma y desarrollar el rock & roll».
Coincidiendo con su 90 cumpleaños, el cantante anunció el pasado octubre su primer disco con material inédito desde 1979. El álbum de estudio, llamado Chuck, está compuesto por nuevas canciones originales escritas, grabadas y producidas por el músico. «Este disco está dedicado a mi amada Toddy», explicaba el cantante en referencia a su esposa desde hace 68 años, Themetta Berry. «Mi amor, estoy envejeciendo.
