En el llibre, editat per Balandra, aporta la seua reflexió sobre el País i el valencianisme. Pérez Casado, observador privilegiat, com també protagonista, de més de mig segle de vida valenciana, analitza les dificultats històriques del País per articular-se, els obstacles físics i socials alhora que repassa la política valenciana i les seues insuficiències fins al moment actual, que considera esperançador. Presentarà l’acte Néstor Novell i el moderarà l’alcalde de Bellreguard, Joan Marco, per al qual «després de celebrar les segones converses de maig, eren l’autor i el llibre més addients». De fet, la possibilitat va sorgir durant la presentació a la Fira del Llibre de València de País! País? País, el llibre que recull els fruits de les primeres Converses de maig.
Ser valencians és un llibre per al debat i la reflexió serena que en paraules de Joan Romero al pròleg, no deixa indiferents. «No és una reflexió amable, ni edulcorada. Es tracta més aviat d’una reflexió que combina una certa decepció, un punt d’amargor, crítica severa, escepticisme i esperança». Ricard Pérez Casado va ser alcalde de la ciutat de València de 1978 a 1988. Va iniciar les reformes urbanístiques que conformen la València actual. Comença de jove en l’activisme polític amb la fundació, en 1965, del Partit Socialista Valencià. Entre l’abril i el juliol del 1996, recent acabada la guerra de Bòsnia, fou nomenat administrador de la Unió Europea per a la ciutat de Mostar. En el 2000 va ser elegit diputat a les Corts Espanyoles.
