La Vuelta 2015 siempre será recordada por el increíble y emocionante vuelco que se produjo en la clasificación general la víspera de la última etapa. Una edición marcada por el duelo entre dos atletas físicamente opuestos – el gran rodador Tom Dumoulin, portador de La Roja durante 6 días, VS el pequeño escarabajo Esteban Chaves. Ambos fueron víctimas del atraco de Fabio Aru, un campeón cuya trayectoria recordaba claramente a la de Vincenzo Nibali: “Il Cavaliere dei 4 mori” (el caballero de los 4 moros) es originario de una isla, Cerdeña, igual que “El Tiburón” cuyo apodo viene dado por su vinculación con el Estrecho de Mesina, que une su Sicilia natal con la Italia continental. Ambos tienen muchas cosas en común. Una de ellas es la de haber inscrito La Vuelta como la primera Grande en su palmarés (Nibali cinco años antes que Aru).
Portador del maillot rosa del Giro en 2015 durante un efímero día, Fabio Aru, que ganó en La Planche des Belles Filles en el Tour de Francia 2017 (igual que lo hiciera Nibali en 2014), fue el único corredor capaz de desposeer al gran Chris Froome y su intocable Team Sky del maillot amarillo, aunque solo fuera por un par de días. Una circunstancia que también se remonta a 2017 en un final de etapa en Peyragudes. Aru ama los Pirineos. Tiene debilidad por España y su identidad. Es un hombre ilustrado, que estudió en el liceo clásico. Conoce la historia y la cultura mediterránea que vinculan a Cerdeña con Cataluña. La bandera de su isla, inspirada precisamente en esos vínculos, sigue ondeando en Alguer, al noroeste de la isla.
El comienzo de la historia de Fabio Aru con La Vuelta se remonta a su victoria de etapa el 3 de septiembre del 2014 en San Miguel de Aralar (11ª etapa). Allí puso contra las cuerdas al líder de la general, Alberto Contador, así como a un impresionante elenco de favoritos compuesto por Chris Froome, Alejandro Valverde o Joaquim ‘Purito’ Rodríguez. Faltaba Nairo Quintana que había abandonado ese día aprovechando la cercanía con Pamplona, su casa en Europa. El ganador del Giro 2014 corría por aquel entonces en las filas del Movistar Team.
En RTVE, ‘Perico’ Delgado lanzó un grito de (grata) sorpresa cuando el joven italiano, que tenía entonces 24 años, y había empezado a llamar la atención tres meses antes con una victoria de etapa en el Giro, concretamente en el Plan di Montecampioni, aceleró a 2 km de la cima del puerto navarro para lanzar un primer ataque decisivo a 1,5 km de la cima. A pesar de tener a Contador al acecho, Aru voló en solitario hace su primera victoria de etapa en el extranjero, que sentenció cuando le quedaban 400 m para coronar.
“¿Os dais cuenta de lo que he hecho, de a quién he ganado?”, exclamaba maravillado Fabio Aru al bajarse de la bici. Y no le faltaba razón. Encabezaba una clasificación de renombre: 2º Alejandro Valverde, 3º Joaquim ‘Purito’ Rodríguez, 4º Alberto Contador, 5º Chris Froome, 6º Rigoberto Uran, 7º Samuel Sánchez y 8º Dan Martin. “Aru me recuerda a mí cuando era más joven”, explicaba Alberto Contador ese día, a punto de conseguir su tercera y última victoria en la general de La Vuelta. “Tiene el mismo golpe de pedal y la misma forma de correr que yo, los mismos cambios de ritmo subiendo…¡y es un valiente! Será la estrella de los próximos años”. Cuatro días antes, Contador había lanzado un “¿Cómo estás?” a Aru en el pelotón. Este creyó que el pinteño se dirigía a su amigo en común Paolo Tiralongo. “¿Te has dado cuenta, Paolo?”, le dijo sorprendido. “¡Me estaba hablando a mí!»
Su victoria no iba a ser flor de un día. Una semana más tarde volvió a imponerse en Monte Castrove (Meis), al término de la 18ª etapa, antes de terminar la ronda española con un 5º puesto en la general final que se juzgó en Santiago de Compostela. ¿Casualidades o un signo del destino antes de regresar a La Vuelta 21 cuyo camino vuelve a desembocar en el mismo lugar? Tras su triunfo de 2015, Fabio Aru terminó 13º de La Vuelta 17, a la que llegó cansado después de un exigente Tour de Francia, y 23º en 2018. Lo vimos llorar tras verse obligado a abandonar en 2019 antes de la salida de la 13ª etapa por dolores de espalda y problemas de salud.
“Es un placer verlo regresar en forma a La Vuelta”, explica entusiasmado el director general de Unipublic, Javier Guillén. “Tenemos muy buenos recuerdos de Fabio Aru, siempre es un gran protagonista.
