«Queremos reiterar nuestro compromiso con la paz, el civismo, la serenidad y también la firmeza y la democracia como inspiradores de las decisiones que hemos de tomar», dijo Puigdemont menos de 24 horas antes de que venza el ultimátum del Gobierno español.
Puigdemont anunció la independencia de Cataluña el martes en el «Parlament» regional pero la suspendió para pedir diálogo con Madrid. Al día siguiente, el Gobierno de Mariano Rajoy le dio plazo hasta mañana lunes para aclarar si declaró o no la independencia.
Si Puigdemont confirma la declaración o no responde al requerimiento, tendrá un nuevo plazo hasta el jueves para volver a la legalidad.

En caso de que no cumpla ese segundo ultimátum, Rajoy aplicará por primera vez en España el artículo 155 de la Constitución, que permite forzar a una región a cumplir con sus obligaciones adoptando las «medidas necesarias» e intervenir o suspender a sus autoridades.
En medio de la expectativa ante una semana que podría ser histórica, Puigdemont evitó dar indicios sobre su respuesta y defendió basarse en valores «cívicos y democráticos» en las «horas difíciles y a la vez esperanzadas que vive Cataluña».

Puigdemont desató la peor crisis institucional de las últimas décadas en España al organizar un referéndum soberanista el 1° de octubre pese a que había sido suspendido por el Constitucional español.
Según el recuento del Gobierno catalán, un 90% votó a favor de romper con España y fundar una «república catalana independiente». Los partidarios del «no», que según los sondeos son algo más de la mitad de los catalanes, boicotearon el referéndum.
La falta de garantías y de reconocimiento internacional marcaron la jornada, que dejó también cientos de heridos por los incidentes entre votantes y policías que tenían orden de impedir la consulta.
